Prayer for America 07/11/06

Father, I'd given up on the idea of heroes. As I got older, the sports stars, actors, and politicians I admired all turned out to be so human, so frail, so ordinary. Why do I need heroes, I wondered. People are just people.

But lately I've started noticing men and women who are different. They sacrifice themselves for others. When crisis hits, they show up. They give more than I thought humans had in them to get the job done. And they do it all by serving their country--this country--in police and fire departments, in hospitals, and in the military.

God, thank you for these new heroes. Thank you for preparing them for this moment and placing them where we need them. And thank you for helping me understand what a real hero is--a person willing to sacrifice for their brothers and sisters.
