25th anniversary of the murder of Daniel Faulkner

Today is the 25th anniversary of the murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. The judicial system in Philadelphia is truly sickening in this case. When will the family and friends of P/O Faulkner have justice?!? It angers me beyond words!! I have a lot of family members as well as friends that are in the PPD; I can only imagine how I'd feel if this happened to one of them.

One thing is crystal clear Officer Faulkner was MURDERED by Wesley Cook AKA Mumia Abu-Jamal. Wesley is such a coward! Please note: While Officer Faulkner back was turned, Wesley opened fire, striking Officer Faulkner in the back four times. Only a coward would shoot someone in the back!

The suspect was charged and convicted of murder then sentenced to death in two separate trials. In December 2001 a federal judge overturned the death sentence and ordered a new sentencing hearing.

Mumia shot Officer Faulkner execution style; I only hope that I live to see Mumia executed...Which is the only sentence Mumia deserves.

Myth #1

The bullet that killed Officer Faulkner was a .44 caliber bullet, while Jamal's gun was a .38 caliber.

Myth #2

Several "eyewitnesses" saw someone else shoot Officer Faulkner and then escape up an alley.

Myth #3

The jury that convicted Mumia Abu-Jamal was racially stacked against him by the prosecutor, who used eleven of his peremptory challenges to exclude qualified black jurors, solely because they were black.

Myth #4

Mumia Abu-Jamal is a political prisoner who was convicted and sentenced to death because of his political beliefs and his past membership in the Black Panthers.

Myth #5

The court allocated just $150 for Mumia Abu-Jamal and his attorney to mount their entire defense.

Myth #6

The Philadelphia Police Department lost evidence, withheld evidence, coerced witnesses and conspired against Mr. Jamal to obtain a conviction.

Myth #7

In an effort to frame Mumia Abu-Jamal and secure a conviction, the Philadelphia Police fabricated a story about Mumia Abu-Jamal's Emergency Room confession.

Myth #8

Mr. Jamal was coming to the aid of his brother who was being brutally beaten by Officer Faulkner.

Myth #9

Mumia Abu-Jamal was denied his right to self representation, in violation of his Constitutional Rights.

Myth #10

Mumia Abu-Jamal's court appointed attorney was admittedly incompetent and incapable of mounting a defense on Jamal's behalf.

Myth #11

Judge Albert Sabo has sentenced more black people to death than any other Judge in the U.S. Therefore, he had a bias against Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Myth #12

The ballistics evidence used to convict Mumia Abu-Jamal was flawed. The police failed to test Jamal's hands to see if he had recently fired a gun and they never "sniffed" Jamal's gun to see if it had been fired.

Myth #13

Only one prosecution witness saw Mr. Jamal with a gun.

Myth #14

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an "award winning journalist" who was targeted by police and Mayor Frank Rizzo because he had repeatedly exposed police corruption in Philadelphia.

Myth #15

Some of Jamal's supporters suggest that the "real killer's" driver's license was found in Officer Faulkner's pocket the morning he was murdered.

THE DANNY FAULKNER STORY

Fighting For Justice For Slain Officer Faulkner

PHILADELPHIA - Twenty five years ago Saturday, Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner was murdered on a Center City street.

On Friday, his widow and 500 supporters are vowing to keep his convicted killer behind bars.

At the same time, those who support Mumia Abu-Jamal say he was unjustly convicted.

25 years after Officer Daniel Faulkner was murdered, friends hugged and comforted his widow, much the way they did that freezing December morning in 1981 when he was gunned down near 13th and Locust streets.

For Maureen Faulkner, so much, yet so little has changed.

"I'm still fighting to have justice for Danny," said Maureen.

While it took a jury just three hours to convict Mumia Abu-Jamal, a former radio reporter and community activist, 25 years later Jamal is still battling to prove he's the innocent victim of a racially biased judicial system.

"This case begs for a new trial because of it being just wrought with error from racism and a lot of other things that happened during the original trial," said Jamal's attorney Robert R. Bryan.

Despite decades of appeals, at every possible court level, the prosecutor who helped convict Jamal in 1982 said not a single judge has ever questioned that Jamal is the killer.

"No question about it Mumia Abu-Jamal killed Danny Faulkner," said Joe McGill, former Prosecutor.

As Jamal's supporters around the world, including Hollywood celebrities, plan still more rallies and appeals, Mrs. Faulkner's battle in her husband's memory continues.

"I'm gonna be back again in court again in January, and I wish that someday I can have closure and peace in my life from this," said Maureen.

For those who knew and loved Danny Faulkner, there's no sign on when that peace or closure might be coming.

On Saturday, while supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal rally, Faulkner's family and friends will attend a memorial mass.

And in a lasting memorial to Officer Faulkner, Maureen has created a scholarship fund to benefit children of murder victims.

Maureen personally presented awards to two of those children at the luncheon to honor Officer Faulkner on Friday.

Rally and Mass mark 25-year-old murder

Twenty-five years to the day after a Philadelphia police officer was gunned down, about 300 people rallied today to support the man convicted of the murder.

On the apron of City Hall, they gathered in defense of Mumia Abu-Jamal and long list of other human rights causes.

Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner was shot to death on Dec. 9, 1981, a crime for which Abu-Jamal was found guilty and sentenced to death. While protesters chanted for Abu-Jamal's release, family and friends of Faulkner celebrated Mass at a South Philadelphia church.

The City Hall crowd marched several blocks to the American Friends Service Committee meetinghouse, where speakers proclaimed Abu-Jamal's innocence and railed against a system they held out as corrupt and racist.


The protest was peaceful and uncontested except for one interruption: the revving of about 35 motorcycle engines by members of several police and veterans' biker clubs.

The cyclists filled a narrow stretch of Carlisle Street one block east of the meetinghouse. As protesters spoke out at the intersection of 15th and Cherry Streets, the engines rose to a roar, drowning the words in a jackhammer-like thunder for about 10 minutes.

At the Annuniciation BVM Catholic Church earlier in the day, some 200 people - about half of them former or current police officers - attended the Mass in memory of Faulkner.

"Danny lived a good life of service. He loved his family, and made the ultimate sacrifice," the Rev. Gary Pacitti told the crowd.

It was the second Mass of the day said in Faulkner's honor. At 8 a.m., the family had gathered at St. Madeline's Church in Ridley Park for a private service, said Faulkner's cousin Fred Dunbar. He remembered him as "a great guy who was always looking out for others."

After Mass, there was a short ceremony at Gino's Steaks to award two education grants made in Faulkner's memory.
