Prayer for America 03/20/06

Dear God, we are proud of the things that make us uniquely American: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Statue of Liberty, our patriotic songs. We are proud of how our nation has lent a helping hand to other nations throughout the world and of our willingness to share our bounty. We are proud of our image as a melting pot. This pride is natural in so great a nation, yet we realize that Americans need more than pride. Help us know when to be humble.

Forgive us those times when our arrogance has built walls when we should have been constructing bridges. Open us to other peoples and other nations so we can all work for peace without measuring which nation gives the most. Let us continue to be proud of our nation even as we acknowledge actions that may have been hurtful to others. Guide us to live with all people on earth in harmony. Amen.+
