Prayer for America 06/29/06
Everyone has ideas about the right and wrong way to live: society, our parents, our partners, and even us. The trouble is, ideas differ, and in the end we get confused and ask, "What should I do?"
Often the result is a compromise. Tolerance and give and take are valuable qualities. No society and no friendship will function without them. But what if it all turns sour?
We've all made poor bargains from time to time, accepted someone else's values only to find they weren't doing us good.
Lord, when we're asked to compromise, help us decide if it's what you would want. Let's talk to find out if it's good, if it's true, and if it will make our lives better. And if the answer is yes, let us embrace our choices knowing they are your will.

Prayer for America 06/28/06
Lord, we celebrate our love for you and for our country. In your steadfast love, you made yourself known to the pilgrims when they braved a harsh new land in the dead of winter.
You guided the writers of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights as they put into words the yearnings of people longing to be free.
You directed George Washington as he learned on the job to define the duties of a president in a democracy.
You have been present as each leader made his mark on our country and as each citizen learned the meaning of freedom.
You have blessed our land, Lord God, and filled our hearts with love and thanksgiving.

Prayer for America 06/27/06
Thank you, God, for these lazy, hazy days of summer. For barbecue cookouts and pool parties with friends and neighbors; for Fourth of July fireworks and baseball games and hot dogs; for visits to theme parks and Little League; for stargazing on balmy nights; for soft night breezes and crickets and ladybugs and grasshoppers; for the feelings of the warm sun on bare skin; for a refreshing cold drink on a hot summer night; for outdoor concerts and birthday parties and county fairs. Thank you, God. Summertime in America is a great time of year.

Prayer for America 06/26/06
Dear God, we want to be a generous people. We have seen fellow Americans ride hundreds of miles to raise money for AIDS research, donate tons of food to the hungry, cross oceans to help those hit by natural disasters. We are cheered by the child who empties her piggy bank to give to the homeless family, and we honor the grandfather who walks three days for a cancer foundation.
Help us continue to live in that generous spirit. Inspire us to think more about others' than our own busy schedules or strained budgets. Remind us that to live in this country is to have access to resources few in the world have. Nudge each of us to discover our gifts for giving, that we may extend your love into our world. Help us know when to put our needs second. Remind us of the joy we find in reaching out to those in need. Help us to be a generous people. Amen.
