Prayer for America 09/09/05

Lord, in this land of plenty that we call home, give us wisdom to discern between necessity and surplus. Give us moderation as we acquire clothing, toys, and all the things we think we need. Show us the difference between needs and wants. Give us generous hearts that are willing to share with those who have less than we do and whose basic needs are not being met. Give us clear vision to see all the marvelous gifts you give each of us each day--sunshine, rain, air, natural beauty--so that we do not feel we must continually acquire more gifts of our own.

Help us maintain a clear distinction between what things we feel we deserve and what things we merely desire. In a land of plenty, help us identify a point of satisfaction and contentment so that we do not live each day merely for the sake of adding to what we already have. Amen.
