Prayer for America 09/11/05

Gracious and loving God, this day reminds us of life's fragility and its strength; of unspeakable evil and unstoppable goodness; of how unrelated individuals can become a close-knit community; of how brokenness can lead to wholeness. On this day we learned what it is to be American.

Tragedy opened our hearts. We saw heroes and found them to be ordinary people to whom we will be forever grateful. We realized our shared nationality mattered more than any difference that divides us. We talked to neighbors, made friends, spent time with loved ones, and prayed for peace.

When the intensity of this day faded, we may have fallen back into old habits and forgotten our passion for live. May the memory of this day spur us to appreciate the opportunity to live in freedom. Help us to live aware of our blessings.. Bless those who grieve the losses of this day. Help us keep our eyes fixed on the peace that is possible only when we all work together in your spirit. Amen.
